Preliminary Task: Semiotics


Semiotics

The study of signs and symbols.

A way of understanding the literal and the possible meaning of images and words.


Denotation: refers to the literal meaning of a word, the "dictionary definition

Connotation: refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional     suggestions related to that word.

Consider camera angles and what they suggest.

-          Camera angles

-          Composition 

      ~ Close up / long shot

      ~ Use of props, background

-          Who it is

-          What they are wearing

-          What do they look like (image/expression/eye contact)


Colours in Semiotics

 Red is the colour of blazing fire and blood, blue the colour of cooling waters and the sky.

This is Connotation.
