Main Task: Target Market survey analysis

This is my question 1, I asked whether they are female or male so that I could aim my media product to the most responded answer. So my results show that the most answeres were female.

Question 2 was asking about their age so that I know who to present my magazine to, from this my results show that 2 out of 3 people were 13-17. This will mean that I will present my product to teenagers and to do this I will follow conventions from existing media products.

My results from question 3 tell me that most of the people enjoy listening to RnB music therefore meaning my genre will be RnB to attract the right people.

My question 4 shows that 2 out of 3 people prefer a digital copy rather than a physical copy, from this I will make a digital copy available on apps such as Apple Apps, Samsung Apps so it is available to download on iPads, iMacs, iPhones, Android phones.

Main Task: Genre of my Media Products

The genre I have chosen is RnB, this is because it is popular in the music industry, therefore knowing it will be successful to sell my music magazine. To know what genre to pick, I made a survey so I picked the most popular answer. I found this useful because i appealed to my target audience.

Preliminary Task: Evaluation of School Magazine Products

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of a school magazine?
In my preliminary task, I used forms and conventions of a school magazine; one way I did this was by using a medium- close up image as my main photo for the magazine. I know this is a convention because other magazine covers that I researched in this genre use a medium – close up image

I therefore chose to use this shot so that it looks professional and more appealing to the target audience.

A way in which my product develops the conventions of a school magazine is how I have put the schools website address on the cover. This is so that it is relevant to the target audience because if they want to find out more about the school and what it is offering they can click on the hyperlink if the poster is digital, or they could search it if it is a physical copy in hand. I haven’t seen this convention used in school magazines so used it in mine to make it unique and stand out by differentiating it from others.

One of the ways my product challenges the conventions of school magazine front covers is the layout because I have challenged the way in which my masthead is positioned and have placed it on the right hand side with the logo on the left. I have also made it so that all the writing is on the right hand side and not going on the picture. This is so that it is presentable and easier to read to attract the target audience of school pupils. In school magazines which I have researched, none of them have a kicker on the cover. So from this research I have differentiated it and added it in a gap on the cover. I chose to break away from conventions because it makes it different and stands out so it is more appealing.

How effective is the front page of your magazine in focusing on the ethos of the school?
My front page focuses on the schools ethos in many ways. First of all, the photo used is of two pupils smartly dressed in their school uniform this links with the “Respect, Dignity and Pride” shown on the schools website. The pride of the year 11 GCSE results which have got them into sixth form are mentioned in a kicker and also as a story headline on my cover page to show the respectful opportunities given when ‘aiming for the highest’ in what you achieve. This little quote is the schools’ tag line so that you achieve the highest.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

From my audience feedback, I have learnt that my magazine looks like it is aimed for more female than male because of the faded pink background colour; however, I deliberately did this because the school house style colour is blues so it is already gender orientated. I also found out that i have considered the schools ethos in my preliminary task. Another person commented on how i have used a picture of two people rather than one so it looks better and differentiates it from others.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
In order to make my cover page and contents page, i went on to Google images to find pictures of other school magazines to see their layout, the pictures used and the way they structured it. This helped me for my preliminary task so i could use ideas. I used DaFont.com for my fonts to use within the cover and contents pages so that it looked more professional and not standard fonts. Also I used Adobe Fireworks to cut images, background colour and pictures, structure the pages and to add the fonts and effects.

Preliminary Task: School Magazine Contents Page

This is my preliminary contents page which matches in with the cover page so in links together. This shows the house style is kept the same. I have taken the pictures myself because it shows the school and pupils in the uniform so it shows it is aiming the magazine with the school.

Preliminary Task: School Magazine Cover

This is the cover i have made for my Preliminary Project.
I have chosed these colours because i think the background is light and therefore isn't too overcrowded and doesn't look too bright. Which also fits ncely with the colours of fonts. I have used blue and red because Blue is the colour of the logo so it matches in with the school, and red because the sixth form uniform associates with red.

Preliminary Task: Contents Page Drafts and Final

Preliminary Task: Cover Photo Drafts and Final

This is my initial idea of my cover page.

I changed the layout because there was a lot of dead space which needed to be filled.
To do this, I added a kicker

Preliminary Task: Masthead fonts

I have chosen this font because of its relevance within the text shows it is used in schools and it seems formal and at a typical age range font. It would be suitable for the Masthead because it is a serif font so it looks suitable. This is attracting and appealing for the reader, it isnt too complex to be read and it isnt plain and simple so it will be good for the reader.

I have chosen this font because i think it isnt too boring and it is eye-catching. The bold, serif style would make the magazine look more appealing to the reader. It is easy to read and bring attention to the audience. This is a readable font which will be make the magazine look more appealing to the audience of Biddulph High.

I have chosen this as a font because its simplicity would stand out for the masthead. I think it would be suitable because it is an elegant font so that it would look formal and would appeal from year 9 right up until year 13.

Preliminary Task: Semiotics

Semiotics

The study of signs and symbols.

A way of understanding the literal and the possible meaning of images and words.

Denotation: refers to the literal meaning of a word, the "dictionary definition

Connotation: refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional     suggestions related to that word.

Images of Semiotics

Consider camera angles and what they suggest.

-          Camera angles

-          Composition

~ Close up / long shot

      ~ Use of props, background

-          Who it is

-          What they are wearing

-          What do they look like (image/expression/eye contact)

Colours in Semiotics

Red is the colour of blazing fire and blood, blue the colour of cooling waters and the sky.

This is Connotation.

Preliminary Task: School Magazine Image Plan

Models:  Lauren Chadwick and Jack Eardley

Camera height/angle/distance:   Medium long shot

Location:  Against a white wall

Lighting:  Just normal natural day light

Mise-en-scene (including props, costume) :  For the costume:  School uniform à Trousers, Shirt, Tie, Jumper/Cardigan. I haven't used any props.

Attempted connotation:  The school pupils breaking records, new renovations, new headteacher.

Planned denotation:  Girl and boy celebrating their success in GCSE’s.

Contingency (in case of model absence/weather):  I chose to take the photo inside school so that the weather didn’t affect the model, also I will edit the background of the image so that it is only the models.

Alternate angle:  Straight on angle level with the eyes so that they’re looking directly into the camera and so that it is a medium long shot.

Thinking points: Actor needs to be reassured that images are only used for the magazine. Models will be from the sixth form so that they are known around school and so that it links together.

Preliminary Task: Colour scheme for my Preliminary Products

These are the three colours I have chosen for my preliminary product. I have chosen the purple for a background because I feel it is quite natural and could apply more to girls but then I have balanced it out by using blue and red writing so that it appeals to boys too. I think that these colours will go well together and will associate the high schools sixth form. The other reason I chose red and blue is because blue is the colours for the lower school (badge and ties) whereas red associates the sixth form (ties). Also I feel that these are vibrant colours and easy to read for the target audience.

Preliminary Task: Target Audience for my Preliminary Product

The target audience for my product will be for members of Biddulph High School, both female and male. It will be for the pupils of the school, the teaching staff, other employees of the school and also parents of the pupils so that they can also see what is going on in the school.

Preliminary Task: Existing School Magazine

This magazine cover is for an idea to analyse and evaluate for when i do my preliminary task for making a school magazine cover.
This has a school name so i know it is a school one, also has pictures of school sports day, performance and the school children.
Also, i know its a school magazine because it has a teacher in a classsroom in it.
